-light yagami- Character Name: Light Yagami. Fandom: Death Note. Grade: Tenth. Age: Fifteen. Dorm: 1-12. Link to Canon Info: All about the nutcase. Basic Appearance: Tall and skinny (5'10'' and around 125 lbs). Pale brown hair, dark hazel/brown eyes. Good-looking guy, not so much in the sense of "physically attractive" since that's all in the eye of the beholder, but in the sense of clean-cut features, neatly-presented, well-dressed and groomed. He carries himself with grace and good posture. history Light was born in Yokohama, Japan. His parents were not, in fact, hippies; they were just a little bit on the Anglophile side. "Light" is a slightly less Let's take a little detour into family history here. Light's father, Soichiro, is Japanese. All very straightforward. His mother, however, was born to a Japanese father and an Italian-American mother. As her father died before she was born, Sachiko was raised in America with her mother's family. In her early twenties she decided to move to Japan, met Soichiro, married him and settled in Yokohama. However, in 1997, Light's maternal great-aunt, Amanda, (Sachiko's mother's sister) was diagnosed with cancer. As Amanda was the last surviving member of Sachiko's family, Soichiro, Sachiko and children decided to move to Amanda's home in Troy to care for her. Three years later, Amanda died. Throughout her last years, Light had insisted on helping to care for her however he could. Of course, being a kid this wasn't necessarily much, but by God did he try -- literally by God. He prayed every day, he read Amanda her favourite verses from the Bible. But she still died. This early experience with illness and death did leave its mark on Light. A lingering fear of those around him dying, a lingering sense of helplessness and guilt... a lingering doubt. But those things, and the traces of morbidity and depression, were all carefully hidden. He found that his parents worried over him and he hated being worried over, so he made sure that he always seemed happy and that he always had something to do. Some kind of purpose, some kind of distraction. And he grew up into a great person, involved in sports, academics, arts and charity work -- a peer counselor and tutor, a singer, top of his class, state tennis champion in the youth singles division. Because it was clear that Light was gifted, high-achieving, and needed the best education possible, in his first year of high school his parents decided to send him to St. Ambrose. He took to the place like a duck to water, quickly establishing himself as a teacher's favourite and helpful presence among his peers. At the moment he's participating in the summer program as a counselor and assistant. personality Light is a nice kid. No, really. He wants to do well. He wants to be perfect. He wants to be a gentleman, he wants to be a saviour, he wants to be a victor, he wants to be anybody but himself. After all, as he is, he's not good enough; he has to constantly get better. Light wants to save the world. He's highly driven, he's a perfectionist, he's stubborn as hell, and he has a healthy ego, though it's balanced with a similarly healthy capacity for objective self-reflection and assessment. He's rather ferociously emotionally stable and intellectually rational. He believes in rules and order. He's ambitious. Hidden inside the makeup of his personality, sometimes even beneath his own consciousness, is a ruthlessly competitive streak. He loves overcoming challenges. In terms of how he presents himself to others, Light ultimately tries to be as charming, agreeable, and polite as possible. He's endlessly patient, helpful and thoughtful, always willing to lend a hand or emotional support. He's far from shy, more than willing to approach a stranger and take the initiative in a relationship; he communicates well. Generally, he's a master at making himself be liked. It's not even a conscious thing -- always trying to look at things from every angle and empathize, always trying to take the moral highground, always being as courteous as he can even if he's disagreeing, it's just what he does. It's built-in. He's as rational about his emotions as he is about anything else, never seeming to let himself get upset or even agitated, tackling things with iron-clad self-control and a level head. It makes Light a very difficult person to genuinely get close to, but few people notice this. He's too good at convincing you that you know him. But ultimately, he is a nice kid. With his strong moral code, his desire to do good, his determined kindness, he's a nice kid, yes. He's just not a genuinely happy one. abilities Results of Experimentation: The ability to, as it were, write things into existence. It's not quite as straightforward as writing "a blue porcelain teacup" and having a blue porcelain teacup appear in front of you: it's harnessing the relationship between language and reality, between things as they exist and the words which describe them. With how the experiments have altered Light, if he writes the right words he can alter reality. The words might technically be "nonsense", but it's not about literalism: it's about how they flow together and interact; the mental energy and intent which is put into them. This is how they change reality. In theory, the ability is limitless, but this is where it gets tricky -- it's all theory, intuition and affinity, with no rules and no way to measure it, which makes it uncertain, tricky, and difficult to control. Finding the right words means, to an extent, getting lost in the language, feeling the way blindly, and the results are far from certain. Furthermore, the greater the change the greater the energy required from the writer. On the whole, it's imprecise and demanding. Now, stepping out of the realm of confusing explanations into something more straightforwardly stated, the experiments will also (eventually) make Light able to see the shinigami Ryuuk. Other Stuff: Light is trilingual, speaking Japanese, Italian and English fluently. He can cook and sew. He's a walking encyclopedia. He can sing. He can play tennis. He can make origami (it's one of his favourite calm-down/destressing activities next to sewing). He writes (poetry, short fiction, non-fiction). He's an amateur photographer. mun/ooc info OOC Journal: AIM: norrowa. e-mail: norrowa[AT]gmail[DOT]com. Timezone: Pacific (west coast of Canada). |
